Why few resumes were not shortlisted for an interview call
Hannovit received approx. 200 resumes, after we posted an Internship position for fresh graduates. For each resume, I must take decision within 30 seconds.
But why few fresh graduates were not shortlisted even for telephonic interview. I would like to share my experience.
Take it as a review, not as criticism.
1- Many applicants attach their resumes and sent an empty mail.
Feels like these guys are too busy to get 10 minutes for a job application. I am not sure you will get time to work in these small companies. Guys just do a practical yourself. Ask your friend to send an empty mail. Now Look at that mail. You will find yourself that this mail looks like a SPAM.
Suggestion - Always write few real lines in email about your experience, related to job you are applying for and why do you want this job. At least keep a paragraph saved in word file and copy-paste from there if you are super busy. Ask any HR you know, they don’t get even 5 minutes to peep into your resume
2- Don’t copy past every technology from google. Resume looks fake.
If you mention 10 languages on your resume and no supporting data about where you learned these technologies from or worked for even 1 Hour on these, It is going to be counter- productive.
Comparison of two applications –
An applicant mentioned Java in his skills and he also wrote source of learning that skill. He mentioned specific Udemy courses and other sites. He also mentioned time-frame of his training. This application was shortlisted. Resume was real for sure.
Another fresh graduate has mentioned C, C#, java, python , ROR and so on and on .He also mentioned he is an expert on all these technologies. OH BOY, You are an expert in every language on earth. You seems smarter than even Bill Gates. I am not capable of taking your interview.
Suggestion - Mention only those technologies which you really know or at least studied once in your 3-4 year of graduation. Also write source of learning if you have got a chance to study even for an hour during your graduation ????
3- Please provide proper naming to your resume. Even my mailbox send your mail automatically in junk by looking at the names :).
Few sample names -
“MyResume.pdf”. Definitely, This is your resume, not your neighbor ???? . Please provide proper name .
“ res.pdf” - Very Busy Champ. Word "Resume" bhi nahi likha..res kar diya ????
“DResume - I am scared ????. Bhai apna naam Dinesh, Devesh ya Devendra ..Write at least your full name
Suggestion - Rename your Resume – “YourName_YearOfExperience_Technology” , e.g. Abhishek_1Yr_Python .
4- Lets look at the few career objectives -
“To work with an esteemed organization where I can utilize my skills, knowledge and abilities to challenge the limit" . Really ???? . Want to challenge the limit ? Utilize my skills ? RESUME BAHUT BHAARI NAHI HO GAYA BHAARI SHABDO SE ?
“To have a challenging and growth-oriented career where my skills can be utilized and further enhanced for growth of the organization.”
Again copy pasted from google ???? It seems, everything, except career objective has been upgraded in last 15 years
Suggestion – Write real objective, let say, "I want to earn my first salary by contributing in your company" or anything which sounds more real. For me it is more impressive. Don't know about other HR :)
DEAR FRESH GRADUATES,
NOW I AM BEING HARSH IN BELOW LINE BUT THIS IS TRUTH -–
GONE ARE THOSE DAYS WHEN PEOPLE USED TO GET JOB IN SOFTWARE COMPANIES BY WRITING XLS, NOTEPAD,WORD AS THEIR SKILLS. OR JUST WRITING C, C++, JAVA WITHOUT ANY SUPPORTING DOC . THAT WAS THE ERA WHEN ENGINEERS WHERE LESS AND JOBS WERE MORE. NOW ITS OPPOSITE.
PLEASE LEARN FEW SKILLS FOR REAL. TO LEARN NEW TECHNOLOGY IS ALSO EASIER THESE DAYS. LOT OF MATERIAL IS AVAILABLE ON INTERNET. YOU CAN IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS WITHIN 3 MONTHS.
